What are waste streams?

In the Inventory, waste is reported in different ‘waste streams’.

These are wastes that usually arise at a site from a particular facility or process. Waste streams are given unique identification codes, which make them easier to track.

The first two characters of the code indicate the site. The following number identifies the specific waste stream at that site.

Most of the wastes that we currently have in stock are in an untreated or partly treated form. A ‘conditioned’ waste stream has been has been suitably processed and packed for long-term management. These streams can be identified by the /C suffix (e.g. 2D02/C).

Example

5C18/C – Encapsulated ILW Liquors
5C (Site = Harwell; Custodian is Research Sites Restoration Ltd.)
18 (Number: Operational waste stream)
/C (Shows that this waste stream has been conditioned for long-term management)
