- Sludge
The sludge originates from routine filtration of liquid effluents and cooling pond water treatment and from clean-up operations of the cooling ponds and Effluent Treatment Plant / associated storage tanks. Sludge particles may be up to 5 millimetres in size by definition. This sludge is held in Wash Collection Tank/ Active Effluent Tank.

Sand and gravel from sand pressure filters in the Pond Water Treatment Plant. Sludge and solids are removed by mechanical filtration through a mixed bed of sand and gravel which is then backwashed into sludge tanks. The filters will be emptied of sand and gravel when the ponds are decommissioned.

Nimonic springs and zirconium alloy components were originally incorporated into Magnox fuel element top end fittings. These components are accumlated as waste when the fuel elements are desplittered.

- Fuel Bottle
A leaking fuel element was removed from the reactor in November 2007 and placed inside a capped bottle to prevent excessive Cs-137/134 leaching into the ponds. The element was left in the bottle until June 2008 causing damage to the magnesium fuel can. Ion exchange resin cartridges were used to remove Cs-137/134 from the bottle prior to removing the element. The fuel element was intact when removed from the bottle and dispatched to Sellafield for reprocessing. High dose rates (>1Sv/hr) were observed on the bottle after the element was removed. The waste consists of the Fuel debris bottle, its cap containing ion exchange resin and an associated ion exchange resin column.
