Oldbury occupies 39 hectares on the bank of the River Severn in South Gloucestershire. The site moved into its decommissioning phase following the completion of defueling in 2016.
An alternative electrical supply has been installed on the site, allowing disconnection from the national grid.
The site’s priorities are to complete the former spent fuel storage ponds decommissioning work and to retrieve, package and condition other forms of radioactive waste. Conventional demolition work will also begin to reduce the footprint of the site.
The now redundant silt lagoon adjacent to the site is now being reviewed by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority as a flagship sustainable nature development.
